If you want a beach to yourself, this beach is for you--peaceful and secluded with very few visitors. A walk south takes you to Five-Mile Point; at low tide you can explore the tide pools or continue around to Whiskey Run Beach. Much further south would take you to Bullards Beach and the Coquille River. A walk north takes you to another name from the history books--Sacchi Beach. Further north is Cape Arago, located near the small fishing town of Charleston. A beachcomber's favorite for hunting agates and pertified wood. During winter storms it is a favorite location for finding the much sought after Japanese glass fishing floats. Great any time of year for long leisurely strolls--sunrise, sunset or anytime. Merchants Beach Ranch House is located on the original homestead of Merchant brothers, Frank and Albert Merchant, hence "Merchants" Beach. The ranch, originally acquired on a patent deed by Mary "Lincoln Gunn" Merchant in 1906, consisted of a much larger tract of surrounding land, including the current Seven Devils Wayside State Park. Mary was the wife of C. H. Merchant, known in Western Oregon history as the father of Marshfield, now a part of the city of Coos Bay. They are both buried in the family plot located in the historical Pioneer Cemetery next to Marshfield High School. In retirement, third generation Don Merchant and wife, Maxine, returned to the old homestead and built the existing house while living in the one bedroom cabin located just down the hill. The building site location was selected for its commanding view of the beach and ocean. This was their residence for the remainder of their days. Merchants Beach Ranch House is owned and operated by 4th generation Merchant family members.
